Code: SCH/21/114 Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) Training

What is an ELSA?
Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) are Teaching Assistants (TAs) who have been trained by Educational Psychologists to have a robust understanding of social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. They are able to plan and implement evidence-based individual and group interventions in schools.

How can an ELSA help your school?

  • Provides evidence of how your school is improving social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Improves outcomes for children and young people from disadvantaged groups
  • Makes effective use of pupil premium funding (other streams of funding may also be used)
  • Schools are often highly effective in whole school policies and class-wide interventions. It is more challenging to create and facilitate group and individual interventions for SEMH needs. ELSAs can meet this requirement to support the holistic development of children and young people.
