Description
1stClass@Writing comes ‘ready-made’ with detailed lesson plans and resources. A specially trained Teaching Assistant delivers up to 60 stimulating and motivating 40 minute lessons to a group of up to 4 children, 4 times a week, In addition to their daily class lessons.

The children develop key skills of spelling, handwriting, grammar, and punctuation in order to complete daily writing tasks linked to Pirate adventures. They develop their composition and editing skills through a balance of supported ‘one-liners’ as well as sustained, independent writing. The Teaching Assistant is supported by a Link Teacher.

Outline
The three day training covers:

  • Delivery of the intervention
  • Talk for learning and writing
  • Grammar for writing – sentences and text cohesion
  • Handwriting and spelling
  • Feedback and developing independence

The focus of these termly meetings is to share good early years practice and provide updates on new initiatives. These meetings will provide opportunities to visit schools across the city and to see examples of good provision.

These sessions will provide additional support and training on topics such as outdoor learning, schemas, early literacy and early mathematics. The focus of these sessions will be developed in partnership with delegates who book on.

NB: The agenda for the meetings will be shaped and agreed in consultation with practitioners.

Code: SCH/21/100 Project X Code– high quality professional development to enable teaching assistants to deliver reading intervention with pupils in Years 2- 4

Audience
Teaching Assistants (or teachers) in Years 2-4

Description
Teaching Assistants will receive 2 days of CPD that will allow them to deliver high quality reading intervention. The Oxford University Press, Project X Code books are a series of adventure books based on a structured progression of phonics, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Lessons will be delivered using detailed session notes to support a trained teaching assistant (or teacher) to teach a small group of children for half an hour, four times a week.

NB: The cost of the training will include the two days CPD, published tests to enable them to reliably benchmark performance and track progress over the course of the intervention and detailed teaching handbooks.

If schools have not already purchased the Project X Code reading books, they will need to do so by contacting their OUP representative.

Cost Details
£600 per delegate
(a reduced cost of £500 if the school already has the teaching handbooks)

Audience

Year 2 Teachers including New to Year 2, ECTs & NQTs +1

The course is designed for teachers to attend all 3 sessions, however individual sessions can also be booked.

Session 1: Reading (October):

• Explore the teacher assessment framework for reading
• Provide ideas and suggestions on how to plan to meet the needs of all pupils including those who are on track to achieve working at greater depth within the expected standard
• Ensuring long and medium term plans for reading are broad, balanced and make opportunities to assess children at key points across the year
• Looking at the range and depth of evidence needed to support Year 2 assessments
• Opportunities to moderate collections of reading and agree the standards, using the exemplification materials to support this

Description
This is an opportunity to ‘Aim High’ and be ambitious for our children in EYFS and in Y1.The focus of these termly twilight meetings is to share good phonics practice and support schools in further improving and sustaining Y1 phonics outcomes of above 85% and above 90%. Meetings will focus on identifying key actions to support the leadership of phonics and how teaching, assessment and monitoring can be further developed.

The first meeting will support writing an effective action plan that: directly links to the School Development Plan; provides a strategic route map; helps you achieve the goals you have set through the working document and paths the way to a whole-school improvement. The meetings will also provide opportunities to visit schools and leaders across the city and beyond to discuss and see good practice in action. Experienced and successful Phonics Leaders and Phonics Champions will also contribute to these meetings.

Each session will focus on:
• Reviewing and refining current action plans
• Reviewing assessment outcomes and actions to further support learning and teaching
• Sharing good/outstanding local practice
• Sharing good/outstanding practice from outside of Peterborough

Session 2 & 4 will be school visits, dates & venues for school visits to be set at session 1 – No charge for school visit

The agenda for each meeting will be confirmed via email and later agenda items will be agreed in response to needs and requests from delegates attending.
